Pro-Function Balaclava
By chance, I came across this mask during a CONCAMO photoshoot. I was immediately taken with it and had to have it.
This balaclava from the German company Pro-Function fits well and has several features:
- Material: 62% PA BodyFresh, 36% Polypropylene, 20% Elastane
- Colors: Black or Stone Gray Olive
- Woven POLICE, CUSTOMS, or JUSTICE logo available
- Woven mesh structure in the mouth-nose and ear areas
- No pressure or chafing points thanks to flatlock stitching
- Made in Europe
The mask fits well and is comfortable to wear for long periods. The flat seam on the forehead doesn’t crease, and I haven’t had any pressure points.
At the ears and mouth, it has a more open, mesh-like design.
This allows for easier breathing.
The front of the neck and back of the neck are long enough to provide good coverage.
Around the eyes, there’s an opening with an elastic band.
You can also wear the mask like a neck gaiter, though I find this style a bit too tight for prolonged use. But I have a big head.
The opening is large enough to pull the mask over a CBRN mask with a filter.
Infrared
I photographed this mask in daylight at 720nm wavelength with a modified DSLR camera. The jacket is the DNA Alpha in Flecktarn with IR camo print, and the pants are original Multicam.
Conclusion
Odor Development
In terms of odor, I was able to wear the mask for about three days in the fall. We’ll see how quickly it develops odor in the summer. The thin material dries quickly after washing, making it easy to wash in the evening in a sink.
Comfort
The mask is comfortable to wear. Even in temperatures around 20°C, I’ve had no issues. I’ll wear it more this summer to update this review.
The Issue with Flames
This mask is not an FR model, but Pro-Function also offers FR balaclavas.
Police Insignia
This mask is also available with POLICE, CUSTOMS, or other insignia.
Final Thoughts
I really enjoy using this mask because it has maintained its elasticity for a long time. It securely covers the face and keeps long hair out of the way.
