Hilleberg Unna – Tent for one Person

I happened to see the Hilleberg Unna at the IWA 2017 and immediately knew this tent was perfect for me. It’s a freestanding solo tent with space for one person and gear.

General

Thanks to its design, this solo tent is freestanding. The pegs, however, provide the necessary stability in stormy weather.

The interior offers enough space for one person and their gear.

The roof segment is equipped with reflective strips on all four edges, so the tent is easy to spot even with limited visibility.

The large entrance makes it comfortable to sit in the tent while cooking outside or sorting gear.

For couples, the Unna can also be a compact solution. However, gear must be stored outside the tent. Backpack covers or a small tarp to cover the packs are recommended.

If you partially or completely remove the inner tent, you have the option to cook in the tent or gain a bit more space to shelter two people with gear.

Setup

The tent mainly consists of the following parts:
– 2x poles
– Outer tent
– Inner tent
– Roof segment
– 12 pegs

The inner tent is connected to the outer tent with an elastic connection, so you don’t need to set them up separately.

The roof section is attached to the outer tent with two hooks at the front and slot buttons at the back.

The material from the entrance of the inner tent can be fixed to the side with an elastic band and slot button.

The outer tent material can also be fixed in place. Due to its length, it has two fixation points.

There are peg loops at each corner. Additionally, there are loops on the sides, allowing the outer wall to be pulled slightly outward for more interior space. You can also button up some material from below to improve ventilation.

This way, you can leave the tent open while packing or enjoy breakfast in the tent and admire the view.

Conclusion

I’ve been testing the Hilleberg Unna for about 2 years now, and I wouldn’t want to be without it, especially in less-than-ideal weather.

What I particularly like:
– The freestanding construction of the tent doesn’t theoretically require pegs. This makes setup much easier, especially in challenging terrain.
– The inner and outer tents are connected, so the tent can be set up quickly and easily. The outer tent can also be used without the inner tent.

Durability
I mostly use the tent in mountainous areas. So far, I haven’t had any issues with rocky terrain. Although the outer shell is thin, it’s still sturdy. I wouldn’t, however, risk it in dense underbrush or thorn bushes.
The only hole in the inner tent was from contact with a hot gas stove.

Weight
The weight of around 2 kg is, in my opinion, perfectly acceptable. Previously, I often used a robust bivy bag with poles, which also weighed about 2 kg. In the mountains, the tent doesn’t need to be as resistant to thorns and brush as it would in other environments.

Space
Since I’m used to a bivy bag, the Unna feels very spacious to me. It’s certainly not comparable to a 2m high tent where you can stand, but it’s more than adequate for my solo tours. I usually leave my large backpack (up to 130 liters) outside. I’ve also spent several nights in the tent with my girlfriend (without gear inside).

Final Thoughts
All in all, the Hilleberg Unna is a fantastic solo tent for trips where you don’t want to spend a lot of time looking for a campsite or if you don’t have space for a larger tent. Since I got it, this tent has been a reliable companion.
Personally, I can set it up in less than 3 minutes on my own.
